Parenthood is a busy busy time, whether you’re staying home with the children or out at work, let’s face it, either way there’s usually very little time for planning meals, it’s the case in our house for sure. Even with the best intentions with meal planning, there are those nights when we’re tired and ask one another ‘what shall we have for dinner?’.
On those nights we usually rustle up something super quick, not too adventurous, maybe even a ready pizza, or at our most exhausted – a takeaway! Rich is the chef in our house and we have our little evening routine, I do story time, put Emilia to bed and he will rustle up our dinner. On the nights when we’re not too sure what to cook, we’ll put some of our ingredients into a search engine and see what it comes up with. Rich enjoys trying out new recipes, using fresh ingredients and seeing how something turns out.
I lack the natural flair that Rich has in the kitchen and so need something with a little more structure. Something that makes cooking fun, a joint effort, something to bring me back into the kitchen (we used to love cooking together pre-Emilia). I like to be told what ingredients to use, go out and get them and prepare a meal exactly to an easy step by step recipe.
Having spent years flicking through cookbooks it was hugely refreshing to come across the Flavour Generator by HelloFresh! HelloFresh are the masterminds behind the weekly recipe boxes, filling our homes with nutritious ingredients to make delicious meals, all planned out for the days you need a little more help.
The Flavour Generator is a fantastic, quick and easy-to-use recipe generator to help you find the perfect flavour for your dinner tonight! You simply add the type of food you like to the drop down menu (choose from Italian, Indian, British to name a few), then state your preference as to whether you fancy something spicy, sweet or tangy today (again there are more options), then press the ‘Generate My Flavour’ button!
We chose the ‘Indian Food’ and ‘Spicy’ options and the Flavour Generator spins to come up with a flavour option for your meal. For us it chose Turmeric and Tandoori Paste and below provided us with two recipes which included both of those ingredients. We opted for the Chicken Tandoori Wraps with Bombay Potatoes. There’s also the option to ‘spin again’ if you’d like to see more recipes…
The Flavour Generator tells you everything you need to know about your meal; Preparation time, difficulty level, nutritional information per serving etc. It lists the ingredients you’ll need, the amounts and even shows pictures of the ingredients to help. There’s even a list of the utensils required to prepare and cook your meal. As a kitchen novice I found all of these lists so useful. No stone left unturned!
Once you have everything you need on the lists, it’s then time to get started on the meal. The instructions couldn’t be easier. Short, concise paragraphs that detail each step with the information needed for all cooking abilities (again really useful to me) with pictures of how your meal should be looking by that point.
Following the steps as a family really got us all in the spirit of cooking together, even Emilia got stuck in with the veg prep, using a little knife from her cutlery set to chop and prepare. It was so interesting to see her touching foods she says she doesn’t like, I can really see why including children in meal prep and cooking allows them to try out and find new foods they like. Mostly, we had so much fun! It gave us the opportunity to spend more time together as a family and we all talked about our day as well as about the meal itself!
After following all of the simple steps, we’d made a delicious and nutritious meal! The Tandoori Chicken Wraps were so yummy and the Bombay Potatoes were great too! Rich was really impressed with them as he said he’d tried cooking Bombay Potatoes before and found them a little difficult to make. So it’s great to have a recipe for a side dish he loves so much!
We found creating this meal as a family so much fun and so great for me to be a part of making an exciting nutritious meal from scratch.
As the Flavour Generator recipes are so varied, I can’t wait to use it for other food ‘genres’! I tried it with the Italian option and came up with a Polpetti and pasta soup which sounds absolutely amazing. Definitely next on the list. I may even give it all a go by myself!
